Homer Central Junior Serves As Ag Commissioner At YMCA Conference

ALBANY, 04/15/13 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) today welcomed Homer Central School junior Alice Jenkins to Albany for the 2013 YMCA Youth and Government Conference.

“The YMCA Youth and Government Conference is a terrific hands-on teaching tool to help students hone leadership skills and learn the inner-workings of our government,” said Senator Seward.  “Alice Jenkins and her peers are our future leaders.  It is great to see their interest in public service and creative vision to improve our community and society.”

New York State YMCA Youth & Government is part of a national program which begins at the local level where young people identify a community issue of concern.  Students then research their issue and write a report based on their findings.  After making presentations at district conferences, students travel to Albany for a statewide event where they are assigned specific responsibilities. 

“As a member of the senate agriculture committee, I was particularly excited to learn that Alice had the opportunity to serve as agriculture commissioner and researched concerns about plastic water bottle use – a timely topic,” Senator Seward added.

Alice Jenkins has also been selected to represent New York State at the National YMCA Teen Conference on National Affairs in North Carolina, June 29 – July  5.
