ALBANY, 03/11/13 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today commented on passage of a senate budget resolution for fiscal year 2013-14:
“For a third straight year, we are on track to pass an on-time, and in fact, the earliest state budget in more than 30 years, and one that focuses on job creation, education aid for our neediest schools, and tax relief for middle class families.
“The senate version of the budget is a sensible plan that keeps state spending in check while providing funds for critical programs that New Yorkers rely on, and boosting initiatives that will foster economic growth.
“The senate budget resolution helps our most vulnerable, restoring $120 million in cuts to the Office of People with Developmental Disabilities. I heard from numerous constituents and public service groups on this issue and was extremely pleased to advocate for its inclusion.
“Mandate relief measures to help local governments cut costs and added funding for our highway departments are included – meeting local needs at an affordable cost.
“Central portions of the ‘Senate Republican Blueprint for Jobs’ are also included. Tax relief for small businesses and manufacturers, cuts to government red tape, and lower energy costs for all will mean more jobs and a better overall state economy.
“Finally, the senate budget resolution increases education aid by $415 million over the governor’s proposal, funneling the new money to schools that have been unfairly cut in recent years.
“Next, the senate and assembly will work together to reconcile budget differences and negotiate with the governor, to adopt a final state budget that best meets our diverse statewide needs and continues to move New York forward.”
