Senate Sets Public Hearing On Affordable Care Act Concerns

ALBANY, 12/31/13 – New York Senate Health Committee Chairman Kemp Hannon and Senate Insurance Committee Chairman James L. Seward will hold a joint hearing on Monday, January 13th to hear testimony on the impact federal health care reform is having on insured individuals, families, and small businesses.
Senator Kemp Hannon (R-Nassau) said, “We waited to call this hearing until the deadlines for enrolling had passed so we would not be interfering with the work at hand. However, there are issues that need to be addressed and we cannot wait any longer.”
Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) said, “A number of troubling issues have been brought to my attention in regard to implementation of the New York State Health Exchange – lost coverage for some small businesses, the proficiency of application counselors, and security of consumer information – to name a few. It is crucial we examine these concerns now so we can advance legislation during the upcoming session to resolve any flaws.”
Experts invited to give testimony include:
- Donna Frescatore, Executive Director New York State of Health;
- Commissioner Shah, NYS Department of Health;
- Superintendent Lawsky, NYS Department of Financial Services;
Additionally, the Senators have invited consumers. representatives of the medical community, insurance companies, insurance broker and agents, and small group insurance providers including Chambers of Commerce and the Freelancers Union to share their experiences and concerns.
