ALBANY, NY – Senator Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) honored Sofie Somoroff, a seventeen year old from the Bronx at the 16th Annual Women of Distinction celebration that took place on the evening of Tuesday, May 7, 2013. Late last year, Somoroff was named the Grand Prize Winner of the OnBuzz Reach for the Stars Aspiring Filmmakers Contest for her lyrical, 71-second “micro-movie,” entitled “Me,” that concerns the subject of bullying. Somoroff is a junior at Bronx High School of Science and a resident of Riverdale.
Senator Klein said: “It was a privilege to honor Sofie as this year’s Woman of Distinction. Bullying and cyber bullying are issues that my office takes very seriously, and I was impressed by the intelligent and creative way that Sofie addressed those topics in her film. By doing so, she set a great example for our children. I know that as the years go by, Sofie will continue to make significant contributions to the Riverdale community and to our state.”
Sofie Somoroff said: “It is an honor to be nominated as a Woman of Distinction this year and I am thankful to Senator Klein for giving me the opportunity to celebrate in Albany with inspiring women from across New York. Making “Me,” taught me a lot, not just about how to make a film, but also about the issue of cyberbullying. The more people who saw the movie, the more I learned that cyberbullying was something a lot of kids had experienced. Because of this, I really appreciate that Senator Klein has taken action to educate and raise awareness on this issue.”
