Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) is joining with Stony Brook Medicine’s Prostate Care Program to provide men throughout our community with free prostate screenings to commemorate National Prostate Cancer Awareness month.
The free screenings will be available from Monday, September 16th through Thursday, September 19th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Stony Brook Urology office located in Suite 500 at 24 Research Way in Setauket. All examinations are free and conducted under the direction of Medical Director Howard L. Adler, MD, FACS.
Informed consent testing and examinations are available for men over the age of 55 , and for men 40 years of age and over who have a family history of prostate cancer or other risk factors. Due to limited availability and required appointments, residents who wish to take advantage of this free program are urged to call HealthConnect at 631-444-4000 to schedule their screening.
According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), prostate cancer is the 2nd most common cancer in American men affecting about 1 in every 6 men. The ACS estimates that in this year alone over 238,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed and over 29,000 men will die of the disease. In total, prostate cancer accounts for about 9% of cancer-related deaths in men.
For those at risk, annual screenings have proven to be a very effective tool in early detection and, in conjunction with the proper medical treatment, have also shown to significantly improve a person’s chances of long-term survival.
“Prostate cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer but it is treatable if discovered early. That is why it is vital that every man take it seriously and why this event is so helpful. I thank the entire staff at the Stony Brook Medicine’s Prostate Care Program for their efforts and encourage those who are advised to get tested to do so,” stated Senator Flanagan.
