Senator John J. Flanagan (2nd Senate District) recently had the honor of presenting Mr. Dennis Sullivan of Selden as his honoree for induction into the New York State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame at a special ceremony in Albany. Mr. Sullivan, who was accompanied to the ceremony by his wife Teresa, was honored for his service to his country during the Vietnam War and his continued dedication to fellow veterans since his service ended.
During the Vietnam War, Mr. Sullivan served as an alcohol and drug counselor with the United States Army HHC Company Division Headquarters, 101st Airborne Division. During his service, Mr. Sullivan rose to the rank of E-4 and was the recipient of the Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal.
Since the end of his service and his subsequent move from Brooklyn to Selden, Mr. Sullivan has dedicated himself to assisting his fellow veterans. He is a Life Member and Past Post Commander of VFW Post 4927 in Centereach and also served as the Suffolk County Council Commander. Currently, he serves as the Department of New York Veterans of Foreign Wars State Surgeon.
Following Supertorm Sandy, Mr. Sullivan visited each VFW Post that sustained damage following the storm and helped open soup kitchens and distribute assistance to VFW members and Ladies Auxiliary members.
Mr. Sullivan has also served in numerous national positions and is currently Special Aide De Camp to the National Commander. Additionally, Mr. Sullivan has been involved in many rewarding programs including the State Commander’s Special Project, Fisher House, Veteran Stand Down, Gold Star Family Monument, Honor Flight and Operation Uplink. He has also had the honor of playing taps at many community events.
According to Mr. Sullivan, his proudest achievement in his work on behalf of veterans is the Recycled Car Program which has provided 42 automobiles to veterans in need. He is also proud to serve as a member of the Veterans Review Board, which offers free homes to returning veterans.
"It is my honor to recognize this unsung hero on behalf of the community and to recognize all the great work he has done throughout the years on behalf of his fellow veterans. This is a man who came home from serving his nation in Vietnam and has continued to dedicate himself by working tirelessly to improve the lives of the men and women who have served our nation while asking very little in return. I am proud to induct Dennis into the New York State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame and to simply say thank you,” stated Senator Flanagan.
