(New York, NY) - Senator José M. Serrano (D- Manhattan/Bronx) and Assemblymember Sandy Galef (D-Westchester/Putnam) sent a letter to Governor Andrew Cuomo asking him to support legislation that would reform the current problematic legislative member item system. In 2010, Serrano and Galef worked together to craft legislation A641/S920 item reform. The bill received wide, bi-partisan support, and while member items have not been included in recent budgets, Serrano and Galef believe it is important to reform the laws that govern member items to ensure a better, more transparent system in the event member items return in future budgets. "We can't achieve comprehensive ethics reform without also reforming our broken and often abused Member Item system," said Senator Serrano.
