(New York, NY) - Senator José M. Serrano applauded the Supreme Court's recent rulings regarding same-sex marriage. With a sweeping decision, the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), a Federal ban on same-sex marriage, was struck down. The Supreme Court also chose to dismiss the appeal brought by the defenders of Proposition 8, California's ban on same-sex marriage, clearing the way for same-sex marriages to resume in California. As a longtime advocate of LGBT rights, Senator Serrano expressed his profound excitement about the rulings and looked forward to the future.
"Today we made history by granting countless, committed same-sex couples equal protections under the law. These rulings are a monumental step towards ensuring the laws in our country are not based on hatred and discrimination, but on equality and justice.
"I applaud the Supreme Court for their leadership on an issue that will allow for us all to move forward as a more united country, where no one is discriminated against based on their beliefs. Today our country stood on the right side of history and we must continue the fight to ensure equality and civil rights for all our neighbors, family members and friends."
