Senator Serrano Brings Free Mammogram Screenings to the 29th District

(New York, NY) - Senator José M. Serrano and the Project Renewal Scan Van Program partnered to sponsor their annual series of free mammogram screenings in the 29th Senate District. As part of an initiative to detect and prevent breast cancer, Senator Serrano sponsored free mammogram screenings in East Harlem, The Bronx, Roosevelt Island and the Upper West Side, providing a crucial service for many women who would otherwise go without.  

"Unfortunately, many women in New York City go years without receiving a mammogram because they do not have health insurance or lack the financial resources to receive a costly mammogram screening each year,” said Serrano. “Thanks to Project Renewal Scan Van a life-saving resource is provided, which helps keep our communities happy and healthy. Breast cancer has taken countless numbers of our mothers, sisters, and daughters. Together, cancer can be fought, but we must be proactive and take advantage of the resources available that allow us to take an active part in the early detection of breast cancer,” concluded Serrano.

Research by the National Cancer Institute shows  that women age 40 and older should undergo a mammogram screening every one to two years. Mammograms can help detect a breast cancer tumor before a lump can be felt by touch.
