(Upper West Side, NY) – Senator José M. Serrano joined Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal to co-sponsor Maple Day for students from multiple Upper West Side schools. Students in attendance were provided with a tour of the “Maple Van,” a 28-foot trailer, built for activities and demonstrations including “tapping” trees to extract the sap that is later refined into syrup. With New York State being the third largest producer of maple syrup in the world, the event was an interactive opportunity for students to learn first-hand how maple syrup is extracted and processed in New York.
“New York City youths have access to some of the best cultural amenities in the country,” said Serrano. “However, it is equally important that we expose our children to the great outdoors and all it has to offer. This was a great learning opportunity for students to understand more about maple extraction and the importance of conserving our environment. Many thanks to Assemblymember Linda Rosenthal for helping me provide this educational experience and opportunity to the bright young minds of our community,” concluded Serrano.
The event was organized in conjunction with the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Central School in Verona, New York. At the conclusion of each lesson, students were provided with a maple syrup sample to remember their experience as well as a bookmark from the Senator and the Assemblymember.
