(New York, NY) - State Senator José M. Serrano co-sponsored State Senator Liz Kruger's “New York State of Health: What You Need to Know About Health Care Reform,” a community forum designed to inform constituents about the new Affordable Care Act. With open enrollment having officially started on October 1, 2013, individuals, families and small business owners are now able to enroll in new, affordable health insurance plans through the marketplace. The community forum served to make individuals aware of their options and learn what the new laws mean for New Yorkers.
“Access to affordable health care is incredibly important for the well-being of New Yorkers and people all across our country,” said Senator Serrano. “With the implementation of key provisions of the Affordable Care Act going into effect, the formally uninsured will now be able to receive coverage, and families or individuals will have access to lower cost insurance. As such, it is the job of elected officials to inform our constituents what these new provision mean for them, and how they can go about seeking coverage,” concluded Serrano.
During the community forum individuals were able to meet with on-site counselors to assist in enrollment, find out eligibility status, how and when to apply, what benefits and plan options are available, and details on financial aid to help pay qualified New Yorkers’ insurance premiums.
