(East Harlem, NY) - Senator José M. Serrano co-sponsored the 7th Annual Teen Fair “Step Up, Speak Out, Take Action” with Council Member Melissa Mark-Viverito in East Harlem. The fair, designed in part to bring awareness to youth and gun violence within the community, also gathered local residents and community organizations to highlight the importance of community involvement, youth empowerment and education.
"This annual fair is a wonderful opportunity for us to become closer as a community,” said Senator Serrano. “This is also a time for us to stand united to combat some of the major issues plaguing the youth in our community. Fighting these issues ensures that our streets are a safer place and that our youth are happy, healthy and in school. It is important to provide our children with a warm environment where they can feel comfortable showcasing their talents and instill in them the importance of a strong sense of community," said Senator Serrano.
Participants enjoyed food, music, backpack giveaways, and local talent showcases all to raise community involvement in youth empowerment.
