Senator Serrano Sponsors Resolution Honoring the Life of South Bronx Pastor, Monsignor Gerald Ryan

(Albany, NY)-A Senate Resolution (J1705) sponsored by State Senator José M. Serrano, honoring the life and accomplishments of long-time clergy leader Monsignor  Gerald Ryan passed the New York State Senate unanimously. Msgr. Ryan, previously known as the longest-serving priest in the city, served the South Bronx community for over half a century and was a shining example of outstanding service. 

"The South Bronx community has experienced a great loss in the passing of Monsignor Gerald Ryan," said Senator Serrano. "Msgr. Ryan had the ability to reach across all divides, brought our community together, fought against social and economic injustices, and encouraged us all to serve as public servants for the betterment of society," continued Serrano.

Msgr. Ryan served as the Pastor of St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church on E. 138th Street for 47 years. During his tenure, he mentored Bronx youth, ensuring their educational success and increased involvement in community outreach. In addition, Msgr. Ryan used his intelligence and charisma to tackle many pressing issues facing his community.

"Msgr. Gerald Ryan will always be remembered for his compassionate spirit," said Senator Serrano. "He was a true public advocate with remarkable dedication to public service and to his beloved church. Through his years of outstanding service and the many lives that he encountered and touched, I am certain that his legacy will live on," concluded Serrano.
