New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle said today that he is urging families and students to participate in Earth Day and Arbor Day week activities by planting a tree or other greenery and taking a photo for inclusion on his Senate website and Facebook page.
“Superstorm Sandy ravaged trees and greenery around our homes and neighborhoods, and we’re just beginning to see the long term damage some trees and shrubs suffered,” Senator LaValle said.
“Thousands upon thousands of trees were lost on Long Island, but we now have a chance to restore what was lost. Long Island’s trees and shrubs help reduce storm water runoff, prevent soil erosion, provide habitat and shade, beautify the landscape and protect our bays and harbors,” Senator LaValle said
This year, April 22 is Earth Day and April 26 is Arbor Day – the perfect time to plant a tree to replace one that was lost.
Senator LaValle said photos can be sent to him at greenupsuffolk@gmail.com. LaValle said to be sure to include the name and hometown of those pictured. “Youngsters,” LaValle said, “should be sure to get a parent or guardian’s permission before submitting photos that will be published in the Internet.”
