Senator Kevin Parker Celebrates New York’s Elders
(Brooklyn, NY) Senator Kevin Parker (D-21) today announced the passage of legislation proclaiming May as New York Elder Appreciation Month.
“In our community, we cherish our elders,” said Senator Parker. “Since childhood they have been our role models because of their honesty, dedication, and tireless efforts to make our communities a better place to live.”
Elder Appreciation Month celebrates the key role New York’s elderly citizens continue to play in our communities through their volunteer activity, civic engagement and their good example. Nearly half of all Americans age 55 and over have volunteered at least once in the past year. Similarly, of Americans 75 and older, 43% have also volunteered within this past year to better our communities.
“As the 77 million members of the Baby Boom generation approach retirement, it is essential we acknowledge the profound impact this change will have on our State and our communities,” continued Senator Parker. “One way to help make that impact as positive as we can, is to celebrate the sacrifice, public service and volunteer spirit of our greatest generation.” They will serve as an example for their children and grandchildren who will be retiring soon. I look forward to celebrating that generational change, and to honoring our elders not only in May but throughout the entire year.”
