"After numerous negotiations with the Governor and Assembly, we have passed a bipartisan gun safety package that will keep New Yorkers safer in schools, homes and neighborhoods and help curb gun violence by going after criminals who use guns illegally. Highlights of this legislation include increased penalties for criminals who use a gun in the commission of a crime on school grounds or straw purchases.
It also strengthens Kendra’s Law to insure individuals with mental illness to get the treatment they need and those who pose a danger to themselves or others will not be able to legally access to a gun. In addition, this legislation proposes life in prison without parole to anyone who shoots and kills a first responder.
Also, this legislation protects pistol permit holders from having their name, address and other information published for all to see. Further, this legislation does not allow for any confiscation of guns or ammunition by legal gun holders. There are also no additional fees.
While I understand some may feel that this legislation imposes a burden on them to comply with certain requirements, the public protection and other benefits I fought for that are in this final piece of legislation I voted for, outweigh those concerns.
