Brooklyn, NY – State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn) and State Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis (R-C-I, Staten Island/Brooklyn) today hosted a press conference on the corner of Bay Ridge Parkway and 3rd Avenue in Bay Ridge to call on the MTA Board to vote to restore B37 bus service. The B37, which was discontinued in June of 2010, connected Bay Ridge with downtown Brooklyn along 3rd Avenue, providing much needed economic development and necessary transportation options to Bay Ridge businesses and residents.
“So many have been stranded and inconvenienced on their commute to work, to school, and to our local businesses,” said Senator Golden. “After 3 years we stand here today less than one week away from the meeting where the MTA will vote on this issue and we call upon them to realize the injustice they have caused thousands of Brooklynites over the past three plus years. We call upon them to restore the B37 so that our tax dollars can be put to work in our community. The message has been the same for the past 3 years, from rallies to petitions, we need the B37 back on our streets and it can’t happen soon enough!”
Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis stated, “For three years, families, seniors and businesses have suffered without the crucial bus service they need and deserve. Transit riders, community leaders and elected officials have fought tooth and nail to restore the B37 through rallies, petitions, correspondence and public pressure on the MTA. The restoration of this bus would be a tremendous victory for the people of Bay Ridge and all of Brooklyn. Over the next week, we will continue to make our voices heard and effect positive change in our community.”
Allen Cappelli, MTA Board Member, who has attended rallies and advocated alongside the legislators said, "Thanks to the leadership of Senator Golden and Assemblywoman Malliotakis, providing both the resources and advocacy, much needed routes such as the B 37, are on the verge of restoration. I am hopeful that the MTA Board will approve this plan unanimously at the next full Board meeting."
