Legislators offer health services at district office
Senator Martin Golden (R,C,I-Brooklyn) and Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis (R,C,I-Brooklyn, Staten Island) are teaming up with Heartscan Services to offer free heart and stroke screenings at their district office. A variety of tests aimed at early detection and prevention of health risks will be offered on August 27th, September 5th and September 10th from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at 7408 5th Avenue in Brooklyn.
“We all know that heart disease and strokes are deadly and can cause great hardships. Early detection and regular screenings can and will save lives," said Senator Golden. "I urge my constituents to take the time and make sure to get screened at this free event. I want to thank Assemblywoman Malliotakis and Heartscan Services, who I was proud to work with to make this event available to the public.”
“The best way to fight stroke and heart problems is to stop them before they start,” said Malliotakis. “Early detection is the most effective preventive measure, and these events offer a great opportunity to take a proactive approach to healthy living. I am pleased to join Heartscan Services and Senator Golden in this effort, and I hope that the community takes advantage of these free screenings.”
Free screenings offered include:
Echocardiogram - a test that uses sound waves to create a moving picture of the heart. It shows the function, size, shape and movement of the heart muscle and valves;
Carotid Ultrasound – a screen for blockage or narrowing of the carotid artery, which, if present, can increase risk of stroke;
Ankle-Brachial Index-Diagnosis PAD - individuals with high ankle-brachial index are more likely to have a heart attack; and
Thyroid Ultrasound - a test that identifies and monitors the growth of nodules that could be cancerous.
Screenings take approximately 30 minutes and are read by a board-certified cardiologist. Results are strictly confidential. To schedule an appointment, please call Senator Golden or Assemblywoman Malliotakis at 718-238-6044 or 718-987-0197, respectively.
