Mayor Bloomberg Approves Golden’s Request for Ferry Service in Light of the R Train Disruptions

Brooklyn – State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn) has issued the following statement, having partnered with Mayor Michael Bloomberg in the wake of the planned Montague Street Tunnel closure, that will disrupt R train service from Brooklyn to Manhattan, praising the reinstatement of ferry service from the 58th Street Pier, starting Monday. 

Golden has had a series of extensive conversations with the Mayor regarding the need to implement such service, in order to ease the daily commute of many. In his letter of June 5th, Golden asked the Mayor, and the MTA, to put in place an alternate plan that respects the straphangers enough to provide alternative means of transportation.

Senator Golden stated, “I am proud to have worked alongside Mayor Bloomberg in this effort to provide a quick, convenient and user friendly way for residents of my district to get to work once the R Line connection to Manhattan ends when the construction starts. As of Monday, those who rely on the R train will have the option to take the ferry at 58th Street and enjoy a quick and comfortable ride to work.”

Golden continued, “In the past, many have used this service, and I believe that once this service starts on Monday, many will be on board the ferry each morning and afternoon, traveling from Brooklyn to Manhattan.  It is a victory for Bay Ridge and most importantly, for the commute of so many.”

One way fares are $2.00. The new Brooklyn stop, on the Rockaway Ferry route run by the Economic Development Corporation, will begin on Monday, August 5th.
