Senator Michael F. Nozzolio and Assemblyman Robert C. Oaks called on the Department of Corrections to re-examine Governor Cuomo’s proposal to close the Butler Correctional Facility in Wayne County.
Senator Nozzolio and Assemblyman Oaks are strongly opposed to Governor Cuomo’s closure of the Butler Correctional Facility, and have urged the Governor and Anthony Annucci, acting Commissioner of the New York State Department of Corrections to re-examine this plan and do everything possible to protect the brave corrections officers and staff who work at Butler. Senator Nozzolio and Assemblyman Oaks have also shared their strong opposition to this plan with Donn Rowe, the statewide leader of the correctional officers' union and have joined with the Wayne County Board of Supervisors in opposing the closure of the Butler Correctional facility.
“Our corrections officers walk the toughest beat in law enforcement and risk their lives each and every day to protect our safety and well being and keep our State's correctional facilities stable and under control. As the New York State Legislators representing Wayne County, we will continue working with the Wayne County Board of Supervisors and the New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association, Inc. (NYSCOPBA) to do all possible to protect our local community and the brave men and women who work at the Butler Correctional Facility," said Senator Mike Nozzolio and Assemblyman Bob Oaks.
“For a community, the size of Butler, the loss of its largest employer will have a devastating effect on the local economy. From a cost saving perspective, it makes little sense since the State will ultimately be responsible for the continued maintenance of the facility and for contracts for water and sewer services that extend into 2026. The impact of this closure on our brave corrections officers and our local community would far outweigh any potential cost savings,” concluded Senator Mike Nozzolio and Assemblyman Bob Oaks.
