Senator Michael Gianaris was proud to lend a hand as Urban Upbound and local donors, including the Greek-American Homeowners Association, provided hundreds of turkeys for residents of Astoria Houses. For years, Urban Upbound and Senator Gianaris have celebrated Thanksgiving by making it easier for those in need to enjoy the holidays with their families.
“There is no better way to celebrate Thanksgiving than by giving those in need the ability to celebrate the holiday with their loved ones. I thank Urban Upbound for making this event possible and wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving,” said Senator Gianaris.
Urban Upbound Founder & CEO Bishop Mitchell Taylor said, “The basic ingredient for community change is sensitizing to community needs. Giving away turkeys during this time of the year is a real way of engaging this population to take advantage of Urban Upbound's more comprehensive services to break poverty and change lives.”
The mission of Urban Upbound is to provide residents of four public housing neighborhoods in Western Queens – Queensbridge (the largest public housing community in the nation), Astoria, Ravenswood, and Woodside – with the tools and resources needed to achieve economic mobility and self-sufficiency, and to break intergenerational cycles of poverty.
