(Queens, NY) Senator Michael Gianaris, a leading environmentalist throughout his career in the State Legislature, earned high marks on an environmental scorecard published by EPL/Environmental Advocates. Senator Gianaris, along with several of his fellow Senate Democrats, was rated highest among all members of the New York State Senate.

“Protecting the environment is of paramount importance, and I am proud to have my work in this field recognized,” said Senator Gianaris. “Our focus when it comes to going green must be with a view to the kind of world we want to leave behind for our children and for future generations. With this goal in mind, I will continue to protect the environment, combat climate change, and help create innovative green technology.”

Legislators’ scores are heavily influenced by their support for the most pressing environmental issues facing New York. Senator Gianaris was proud to push for legislation creating a $1.5 billion incentive program for solar panels, regulating dangerous chemicals in children’s products, and reducing New York’s greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, Senator Gianaris supports a comprehensive assessment of the public health and environmental effects of hydrofracking before any gas drilling permits are issued in New York.

Senator Gianaris has a long record of protecting the environment here in Queens. He continues to lead the fight in improving air quality and ridding our neighborhoods of toxins emitted by outdated power plants. He has always been a strong advocate for green space and will continue his work to improve our public parks.

Senator Gianaris authored the Clean Energy Act, which became law in 2001 and encourages power companies to upgrade their facilities with new power plants that are cleaner and more efficient.

Since its creation in 1969, EPL/Environmental Advocates has fought for the future of New York’s environment and the health of its citizens. The EPL/Environmental Advocates scorecard reflects New York lawmakers’ votes on legislation that will impact the environment.
