(Albany, NY) On Tuesday May 7th Senator Michael Gianaris honored Taryn Sacramone, Executive Director of the Astoria Performing Arts Center, at the 16th annual New York State Senate Women of Distinction Ceremony in Albany. The ceremony provides Senators across New York State with an opportunity to honor outstanding women whose contributions to their neighborhood have enriched the lives of those in the community.
“Through her work at APAC, Taryn Sacramone highlights the creative spirit of western Queens and embodies our prioritization of culture and the arts,” said Senator Gianaris.
The Astoria Performing Arts Center produces revivals and premieres of plays and develops new works through readings and workshops. APAC also offers free community programs including a summer performance camp for children ages 8-13, an after school playwriting program for middle school students, and a performance program for Queens residents over the age of 60.
“In addition to providing high quality theater in the heart of our neighborhood, the programs Taryn oversees engage local youth and seniors, linking generations of Astorians through a deep appreciation of theater and the arts,” added Senator Gianaris.
The Women of Distinction program was created as part of the New York State Senate’s celebration of Women’s History Month. In addition to recognizing present-day women, each March, the Senate hosts a display that honors other distinguished women from New York’s past, from leaders of the 19th Century suffragist movement to pioneers in education, science and the arts. On Tuesday, May 7th, Women of Distinction from all over the state were honored at a special ceremony at the Capitol.
