Reflects on Women’s Accomplishments, New York’s Contributions to Empowerment, and Encourages Volunteerism
(Albany, NY) Senator Neil D. Breslin (D-Delmar) is reminding all New Yorkers that March is Women’s History Month, an opportunity to reflect on how women have shaped our society, government, culture and all aspects of our lives, as well as to raise awareness about the inequalities that remain.
Senator Breslin pointed out that this month is a great time for volunteers to help women in the community while also focusing on the work that still has to be done, particularly to ensure equal pay for equal work and the protection of women’s health rights.
“New York has played a proud role in women’s history and now we must continue to lead the way for a brighter future,” Senator Breslin explained. “We owe it to our daughters and granddaughters to continue the legacy of equality and justice passed down to us from the struggles of our mothers and grandmothers.”
Senator Breslin noted that Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton formed the National Woman Suffrage Association in New York in 1869 to fight for a women’s right to participate in our democracy. The women’s suffrage movement gained its ultimate momentum at the Seneca Falls Convention when Lucretia Mott spoke to the suffragettes who journeyed to New York in search of equality, culminating in the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which established women’s right to vote.
“While we have made great strides, more must be done to guarantee women’s rights, protections and equality. I encourage all New Yorkers to reflect on women’s history this month and join together to build a more just and equitable state,” Senator Breslin concluded.
National Women’s History Month has been officially celebrated in the month of March since 1987. For information and local Women’s History Month events please go to: http://womenshistorymonth.gov/
