(Albany, NY) Senator Neil D. Breslin (D – Delmar) is pleased to announce that the New York State Senate approved the nomination of Jenny Rivera to the New York Court of Appeals. Governor Andrew Cuomo selected Jenny Rivera from a list of seven candidates to succeed Judge Carmen Beauchamp Ciparick. Jenny Rivera is now the second Hispanic woman to sit on the Court.
The Commission on Judicial Nomination, chaired by former Chief Judge Judith Kaye, conducted extensive outreach in seeking applicants to the New York Court of Appeals and its efforts resulted in the highest number of applications ever (75), the most female applicants (35) and the most minority applicants (24).
“In order to get the best results from our courts system, we need to ensure we are sending the best people to serve on New York’s behalf,” Senator Breslin said. “I am honored to announce the confirmation of Jenny Rivera to the Court of Appeals and am positive her progressive leadership being a welcomed addition to the Court of Appeals.”
Ms. Rivera earned her undergraduate degree from Princeton University, her J.D. from New York University School of Law and her LL.M. from Columbia University School of Law, concentrating on Constitutional and Feminist Theory. Ms. Rivera is a member of the New York State Bar Association and is admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of the United States, the Third Circuit Court of Appeals and the district courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York.
Currently, Jenny Rivera is a Professor of Law at the City University of New York School of Law (CUNY). At CUNY she is also the Founder and Director of the Law School’s Center on Latino Rights and Equality which promotes law reform scholarship, public education and litigation relating to civil rights and issues facing the Latino community.
“I commend Governor Cuomo and former-Chief Judge Judith Kaye for selecting such a qualified and exceptional candidate to serve on New York Court of Appeals,” Senator Breslin concluded. “I wish Jenny Rivera all the best and look forward to working with her in the future.”
