Senator Gallivan Honored by New York State Troopers

Former Trooper and Sheriff Presented With Walter J. Mahoney Award

NEW YORK CITY – The New York State Troopers Police Benevolent Association (PBA) honored New York State Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R-C-I, Elma) with the Senator Walter J. Mahoney Award at their annual awards dinner on Thursday night at The Sparks Steakhouse in Manhattan.

The Senator Walter J. Mahoney Award is given annually to a member of the New York State Senate who has demonstrated through words and actions his or her commitment to the men and women of the New York State Police and public safety in New York State.

“Words cannot express the respect and appreciation I have for the members of the State Police and all law enforcement professionals across New York State. As a former trooper and Erie County Sheriff, I understand on a very personal level that the safety and services our officers in uniform provide are the fundamental building blocks of strong and safe communities,” Gallivan said. “It has been an honor and a privilege to advocate in the Senate on behalf of the brave men and women who wear the badge and I hope the New York State Police will always look on me as one of their own.”

Senator Gallivan served 15 years with the New York State Police, rising to the rank of captain before being elected Sheriff of Erie County in 1997, serving in that position until 2005.

He is the third recipient of the Senator Walter J. Mahoney Award.

The New York State Police was founded in 1917 with an initial class of 232 men who primarily served rural regions of the state by patrolling communities on horseback. In the nearly 100 years since its inception, The New York State Troopers, as they would come to be known, have evolved into one of the preeminent public protection and law enforcement agencies in the nation, now employing over 4,600 sworn officers stationed across New York State.

The New York State Troopers PBA Awards Dinner is an annual event where the Troopers recognize and honor excellence among their own ranks and award special honors to community leaders who share the New York State Police’s commitment to public safety and protection.
