Senator Phil Boyle was joined by members of the community recently to applaud the installation of traffic signals at the Barberry Road / Wagstaff Lane / Montauk Highway intersection in West Islip. State funding was secured for the installation of traffic lights at this dangerous intersection near West Islip High School after several students sustained injuries in motor vehicle accidents in 2011.
Phil Boyle said: “The safety of students who live south of Montauk Highway and travel to and from West Islip High School each day has been a top priority for me. I am pleased to be joined by Christine Shaw and Christopher Wilson, both having suffered injuries due to accidents at this intersection, to applaud the new traffic lights that provide a safer crossing for West Islip High School students and others in the community.”
The Suffolk County Police Department had assigned a second school crossing guard at the Barberry Road / Montauk Highway intersection to remain in place until work on this traffic signal was recently completed.
