Community Members Safely Dispose of Unwanted Prescription Drugs
Islip, NY - Senator Phil Boyle (R-Bay Shore) recently sponsored a “Shed The Meds” program at the Islip Fire Department to ensure the safe disposal of unwanted prescription medications. As Chairman of the NY Senate Committee on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Senator Boyle invited the community to join him in his efforts to help prevent the improper and illegal use of prescription drugs.
The safe disposal of unwanted or expired drugs also helps to protect our waterways and ensure the safety of our local water supply, as recent studies have shown that disposing of medications down your toilet or sink can have adverse affects on our local ecosystems.
“By collecting and properly disposing of household drugs, we can help to keep them out of the wrong hands,” Senator Boyle said. “Safely disposing of these medications will also help keep harmful materials from potentially damaging our water supply.”
Over 200 residents participated in the collection by driving up and dropping off unwanted prescription medications at the Islip Fire Department on April 27th. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency was on hand to collect and safely dispose of the medications.
