SENATOR TERRY GIPSON CALLS ON SENATE TO PASS LEGISLATION RESTRICTING K-2 STANDARDIZED TESTING
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY-- New York State Senator Terry Gipson (D-Dutchess, Putnam) issued the following statement calling on the Senate to pass his legislation (S.4764) that would restrict standardized testing in grades K-2 and applauded State Education Commissioner John King’s support of this measure:
“Before entering office last January, I noticed an alarming trend in our education system marked by the introduction of Common Core, leading us towards standardization rather than individualization. This trend is especially troubling for our youngest of students, who should be encouraged to use their imaginations and think creatively.
“Last April, I was proud to sponsor the Truth About Testing Act (S.4764) which would eliminate standardized testing in grades K-2 for non-diagnostic purposes. This legislation passed the Assembly and I call on my colleagues in the Senate to follow suit and support this responsible bill that will protect our children.
“I applaud Commissioner King, the Alliance for Quality Education and NYSUT for their support on this issue and challenge my colleagues in the Senate to act swiftly during the next legislative session."
