SENATOR TERRY GIPSON’S STATEMENT ON RIVERKEEPER DOCUMENTS CITING THE USE OF FRACKING WASTE ON NYS ROADS

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – New York State Senator Terry Gipson (D-Dutchess, Putnam) issued the following statement following Riverkeeper’s release of documents stating that multiple municipalities have received approval from New York State to use fracking waste on their roads. Senator Gipson is the prime sponsor of NYS Senate legislation (S.3333) that prohibits fracking wastewater from being used on highways for purposes such as melting ice. Fracking waste contains a variety of chemical and radioactive contaminants that can be potentially harmful to people and the environment.

“We have a responsibility as a statewide community to protect our environment and all New Yorkers from the harmful chemical and radioactive elements that are found in the wastewater created by hydraulic fracturing. Whether it’s Western, Downstate or Upstate New York – we are all equally impacted by environmental dangers like this.

“I urge my colleagues in the legislature to pass this common-sense legislation with broad bipartisan support to protect the health and quality of life of all New Yorkers.”
