Senator Stavisky Recognizes Service of Men and Women in Armed Forces on Veterans Day

Flushing, NY—In honor of Veterans Day on Monday, November 11, Senator Toby Ann Stavisky (D-Flushing) recognized the dedication and sacrifice of past and present members of the United States’ Armed Forces and urged New Yorkers to also take time to recognize our brave men and women in uniform.

“I would like to thank our veterans and active duty military for their bravery and service to protect our nation and the freedoms we hold so dearly,” Senator Stavisky said. “In addition to honoring them on this day, I hope New Yorkers will join me in supporting veterans every day as they look for jobs and heal from physical and emotional wounds. I am glad that our state came together in the last election to amend the Constitution to extend extra civil service credit to disabled veterans and will continue to push for legislation that levels the playing field for those who have served.”

Veterans Day was originally named “Armistice Day” to commemorate the cessation of WWI hostilities at 11:00 AMon November 11, 1918. Congress renamed Armistice Day “Veterans Day” in 1954 and designated the holiday as a celebration of “all American veterans of all wars.” It is the only national holiday that is required by public law to be observed on its specific and historically significant date regardless of the day of the week on which it falls.
