New Registration Program for STAR Exemption

The 2013-14 State Budget requires all homeowners receivng the Basic STAR exemption to register with the Tax Department as part of an effort to eliminate inappropriate exemptions.

STAR registration will begin in August 2013. The Department will mail notices to all property owners currently receiving the STAR exemption, and implement a comprehensive outreach campaign to get the word out. Correspondence will be mailed September 16 through October 14. 

Attached is a fact sheet about the program. More information can be accessed at: www.tax.ny.gov/pit/property/star/index.htm. The registration program will allow homeowners to quickly and easily register for the Basic STAR exemption.

Homeowners whose registration verifies the property meets eligibility criteria will receive the STAR exemption in 2014 and subsequent years, as long as they continue to meet the eligibility requirements.
