Squadron Announces Safety Measures at Two Busy Intersections

Implementation Comes After Requests By Senator Squadron And Community Groups

BROOKLYN – At the request of State Senator Daniel Squadron, a Leading Pedestrian Interval (LPI) is currently being implemented by the city Department of Transportation (DOT) at the intersection of Hicks Street and Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn. This follows the successful change of the three phase signal, earlier in the summer, at the intersection of Congress, Bergen, and Court Streets to benefit pedestrians. Requested by Senator Squadron, the Cobble Hill Association, and Brooklyn Community Boards 2 and 6, this signal is in the vicinity of several schools, including the Brooklyn Heights Montessori School and the Brooklyn Preschool of Science.  

“Nothing is better than a walk around the neighborhood, and now whether crossing Court Street or heading to Brooklyn Bridge Park, it’s going to be safer and more comfortable than ever before,” said State Senator Daniel Squadron. “I thank the DOT for heeding our call to improve these difficult crossings. I look forward to continuing to work with them, Community Boards 2 & 6, and community groups to keep making our neighborhoods safer and more livable.”

Leading Pedestrian Intervals give pedestrians a 3-5 second walk signal before a traffic light turns green for vehicles. This allows pedestrians a chance to begin crossing the street before vehicles make turns across the crosswalk, and can cut down on potential injuries at crowded intersections.
