Squadron, U.S. Sen. Schumer, AG Schneiderman, & BP Brewer Highlight Community Engagement
Community Members Participated in Over 15 Discussion Groups on District and State-wide Issues
NEW YORK – Yesterday, State Senator Daniel Squadron hosted his sixth annual 26th District Community Convention, bringing together over 350 community members to shape the future of the district and the state.
In his opening remarks, Senator Squadron discussed how each year community members have joined the Convention, been constructive members of the discussion groups, and have become an active part of creating a more responsive government.
“The Convention is a reminder that speaking up and getting involved is worth it. But today is not just about getting me to listen. It is about getting involved so that you are able to connect with like-minded neighbors, generate ideas of your own, and help to raise your own voice in the best, most effective way, you can.”
Attorney General Eric Schneiderman delivered the keynote address to constituents, activists, and community leaders in attendance. U.S. Senator Charles Schumer and Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer also joined the program.
Following the opening plenary, participants split into moderated discussion groups on 15 topics, from affordable housing and tenants’ rights to education and open government; there were also Spanish and Chinese-language conversations. The ideas and feedback provided by constituents during those sessions will help shape Senator Squadron’s legislative and community priorities for the coming year.
