ALBANY, N.Y.-- State Senator David J. Valesky (D-Oneida) announced that the New York State Senate passed two resolutions this week commemorating the life of former South African President Nelson Mandela. The resolutions, co-sponsored by Senator Valesky, recognize Mandela’s pivotal contribution to ending apartheid through peaceful, non-violent resistance, commemorate the 24th anniversary of his visit to New York City and mourn his recent death on December 5, 2013.
“Nelson Mandela dedicated his life to achieving a free society that offered equal opportunities to all of its citizens, regardless of their backgrounds,” Senator Valesky said. “I am pleased to be able to honor a man who served as an inspiration to many of us and who fought for the same ideals that we strive for here in the United States.”
