In early May, Senator George Maziarz and his legislative colleagues wrote to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to call on that state agency to extend the public comment period on CWM’s expansion proposal by an additional sixty days. Today the DEC announced they will heed this request and push back the deadline for the public to submit written comments from early July to September 5, 2014.
CWM Chemical Services, Inc. is proposing to build and operate a new hazardous waste landfill on its current property in Model City, New York. In light of extensive public concerns about the impact of this proposed expansion on the health and well-being of Niagara County residents, Senator Maziarz and his colleagues wanted to give the public as much time as possible to comment on CWM’s plans.
Senator Maziarz said, “I am very glad the DEC was responsive to my request for more public input on this proposal. Decisions about accepting more hazardous waste in our community will affect generations of local residents. The more scrutiny the public can give this expansion the better. The public deserves to have their voice heard.”
Also, the DEC and the Facility Siting Board will hold public hearings on the proposed CWM expansion on July 16, 2014 at 1:00 PM and 6:30 PM. These events will take place at Lewiston-Porter High School, located at 4061 Creek Road, Youngstown, NY 14174.
Written comments on CWM’s application can be sent anytime between now and September 5, 2014 to:
