Senator Maziarz legislation designates state highway in honor of Vietnam Veterans

Yesterday, the State Legislature approved a bill (S.7223/A.9518) designating a portion of Route 425 in the Cities of North Tonawanda and Tonawanda as the “Twin Cities Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway.”

In 1970, legislation was passed to dedicate a stretch of Route 425 to Vietnam Veterans that lost their life in the war as the “The Twin Cities Memorial Highway.”  The portion of Route 425 that was dedicated stretched from Wheatfield Street and Erie Avenue in North Tonawanda to Youngmann Highway in Tonawanda.  Eventually, both cities’ moved their Vietnam memorials along the dedicated route to alternative locations.  The legislation passed yesterday will rename the Twin Cities Memorial Highway to “Twin Cities Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway” to return to the original intent of the 1970 law.

“The renaming of Twin Cities Memorial Highway to “Twin Cities Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway” is an important reminder of the sacrifice so many veterans made during the Vietnam War to defend our freedom,” Senator Maziarz said.  “We can never say ‘thank you’ to our veterans enough.”

The measure is now awaiting the signature of Governor Andrew Cuomo.
