Senator Martins to Board of Regents: Delay Common Core

Senator Jack M. Martins joined with his colleagues on both sides of the aisle, calling on the Board of Regents to delay implementation of the Common Core education curriculum. The call comes after months of listening to concerns from parents, educators and students that the Common Core simply wasn’t being implemented to the best interests of educating students.

Senator Martins has been outspoken on the issue, even urging New York Education Commissioner Dr. John King to take action before the legislature was forced to act during a recent meeting of the New York State Senate Education Committee. Senator Martins and his colleagues are calling for a two-year moratorium on the implementation of the Common Core and the sharing of student data with a private, third party, referencing InBloom.

“The State Education Department's rollout of the Common Core has been an unmitigated disaster only made worse by its failure to acknowledge the obvious. I join my colleagues in calling on the Board of Regents to delay Common Core testing for two years to allow for appropriate curricula and teaching adjustments. Thus far, State Ed has failed to do its job - in the private sector they would have been long gone,” Senator Martins said.
