Senator Jack M. Martins (R-7th Senate District) recently welcomed local high school students Jack Wesson (Manhasset High School), William Delaney (Manhasset High School), and Clairiola Etienne (Westbury High School) to the State Capitol in Albany.
The three students were in Albany to participate in the League of Women Voters New York State Education Foundation’s annual Students Inside Albany conference. The conference is designed to increase high school students’ awareness of their responsibility in a representative government and to provide the tools necessary for meeting that responsibility. Students from all across the state come to Albany to learn about state government and how individual citizens can get involved in the policy making process.
As part of the conference, Jack, William, and Clairiola spent an afternoon “shadowing” Senator Martins during a recent Senate session. Senator Martins talked with the three students about his role as a State Senator and what he does on a typical day in Albany when the Senate is in session. Senator Martins also brought them onto the floor of the Senate Chambers, where they were able to watch legislative debates and votes on bills.
