SCHENEVUS, 07/18/14 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today announced that a $50,000 economic development grant he secured will assist with beautification efforts in Schenevus.
“The Town of Maryland, including the Village of Schenevus, is an idyllic location,” said Senator Seward. “By upgrading and further beautifying the community, the quality of life for residents improves and more visitors will be encouraged to stop by bolstering our local businesses.”
The capital funding secured by Senator Seward has been used to construct a new gazebo in Borst Field. The structure will be available for public use year-round and will be a hub for activity during the annual Schnevus Fireman’s Carnival. Remaining funds will be used for sidewalk replacement throughout the downtown district.
Town of Maryland Supervisor Peter Oberacker Jr. said, “Senator Seward has been very supportive of our town, and it speaks to his concern for the small communities he represents. Upgrades like this are difficult to budget for and would not be possible if local tax dollars were the only source of funding available.”
Former Town of Maryland Supervisor Marjorie French said, “The gazebo construction has been a long-standing labor of love for so many community members. Senator Seward’s support was instrumental in making this a reality.”
Schenevus Volunteer Fire Department member Rich Kenyon said, “This new gazebo will greatly enhance our annual Schenevus Fireman’s Carnival and provide us with a terrific year-round community resource. We appreciate Senator Seward’s advocacy and the state’s investment in our community.”
“Communities need a focal point, and, I am certain this new gazebo will be just that for Schenevus for generations to come,” Senator Seward concluded.
