MOUNT VERNON, NY - State Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester), joined by Mount Vernon elected officials and community leaders, unveiled the newly renovated Broad Street Pavilion on the evening of Saturday, August 9th. The official ribbon cutting was followed by a viewing of “Despicable Me II,” for Fleetwood families to enjoy. The movie was part of Senator Klein’s Summer Movie series which provides free screenings and popcorn at various locations throughout the 34th Senate District during the summer season.
The completely restored Broad Street Pavilion, located on the Fleetwood Playground at the corners of Fleetwood Ave & Broad Street, was a project three years in the making and made possible through a combination of municipal and state funding which Senator Klein secured. Construction began in 2010 and finished just in time for the families to enjoy the new entertainment venue this summer.
“Warm summer nights are made for family fun. I am so pleased that I was able to play a part in helping deliver this newly renovated pavilion so Fleetwood families can take advantage of the beautiful weather and take in a great show. With these improvements to the park, generations of residents will be able to have great entertainment options right in their own backyard for many summer seasons to come,” said State Senator Jeff Klein.
“The Broad Street Playground is along a busy area in the Fleetwood section of the city and we want to thank Senator Klein for his assistance in securing funding for improvements to the playground,” said Mayor Ernest D. Davis. “We encourage residents to bring the children out for movies and fun at the playground.”
“The community of Fleetwood is thrilled that thanks to this great collaborative effort between our local and state elected officials and the Fleetwood Neighborhood Association volunteers we were able to make these beautiful improvements to open space in Fleetwood. Projects like this are a shining example of the amazing results that can happen when everyone comes together for the community,” said Fleetwood Neighborhood Association President Mike Justino.
In 2010, the President of the Fleetwood Neighborhood Association contacted Senator Klein’s office requesting help in refurbishing the dilapidated tin structure that stood as a pavilion in the playground in addition to make essential upgrades to the worn-out park facility. Senator Klein was able to grant $100,000 to the Fleetwood Neighborhood Association for the capital improvements, with the purchase and assembly of the pavilion as the centerpiece of the grant. Other improvements made with the $100,000 include new fencing around the playground, repaving of the park, and the planting of decorative fauna around the pavilion. An additional $20,000 for the project was provided through municipal funding.
