Klein, Gjonaj, Community Leaders, Friends & Neighbors Light Up the Community for the Holidays
Bronx, NY – In celebration of the Christmas holiday, State Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) and Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj (D-Bronx), along with community leaders, families and children, hosted their 19th annual tree lighting in Morris Park and the Pelham Parkway community, on Thursday, December 11th. The tree lighting extravaganza commenced in the late afternoon, with the first event at Rudy Macina Peace Memorial Plaza, followed closely by the tree lighting at Pelham Parkway and White Plains Road.
“The holiday season is such a special time of year and our annual Christmas tree lighting extravaganza puts everyone in the festive spirit,” said Senator Jeff Klein. “This marks our 19th annual tree lighting, and each year it just gets better and better as Bronxites spread the good cheer. I wish everyone a very, Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy holiday season.”
The tree lighting celebration began at Rudy Macina Peace Memorial Plaza, with a dazzling 16-foot Christmas tree. The first event featured steaming cups of hot chocolate, holiday treats for the children and a beautiful selection of Christmas carols sung by the students of P.S. 83.
"I am happy to be able to aid in bringing the spirit of the holidays to my community. This time of year is always the busiest, but I find it important to come together and enjoy each other's company as we reflect and rejoice in the season's coming,” said Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj.
After the first tree lighting, community members followed Senator Klein and Assemblyman Gjonaj, with Santa leading the procession in a horse drawn carriage, to the tree lighting at Pelham Parkway and White Plains Road.
Throughout the second event, Santa visited with guests and handed out goody bags to the children. Everyone in attendance enjoyed snacks and hot beverages while the students from P.S. 105 charmed the crowd with Christmas carols like, “We wish you a merry Christmas,” “Jingle Bells” and “Santa Claus is coming to town.”
