BRONX, NY – Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester), Assemblyman Jeff Dinowitz (D-Riverdale) and Council Member Andrew Cohen joined local residents and community leaders for the grand opening of C-Town supermarket in the Woodlawn area of the Bronx. Woodlawn, an isolated community in the north Bronx, has been without a full-service supermarket for 22 months after the only supermarket closed in the spring of 2012. Local residents have had to rely on local delis, commutes to supermarkets in other communities and expensive delivery service for groceries.
After the previous supermarket had closed, Senator Klein and local elected officials worked to identify new tenants, C-Town owners, Abdul and Jamal Hamid, connecting them with the landlord. Additionally, Senator Klein helped expedite building permits through the Department of Buildings to help open this vital service to the community as soon as possible.
The grand opening featured a ribbon cutting, food, music and giveaways.
Senator Klein said: "Woodlawn has been without a grocery store for nearly two years, making it challenging for local residents, particularly seniors, to access this basic service. That's why I've worked with community leaders, the landlord and the Department of Buildings to bring a full-service grocery store back to Woodlawn. The need for this C-Town was clearer than ever this week as snow continued to fall today and I'm happy that C-Town is now officially open for business."
“It has been a long time coming, but Woodlawn finally has a supermarket again. I’m very pleased that local residents will be able to shop locally right here in the Woodlawn community,” said Assemblyman Dinowitz.
Council Member Andrew Cohen said, “I am pleased that Woodlawn finally has a supermarket again as the community has gone far too long without one. Thank you to C-Town and Jamal and Abdul Hamid for investing in our community. This supermarket is a lifeline for our residents, particularly our seniors, and is a much needed amenity in the Woodlawn neighborhood.”
