Senator John Bonacic announced today that Christian Capella, a first grader from Tuxedo Park School, submitted the winning poster in the 2014 New York State Senate Earth Poster Contest for the Senator’s 42nd District.
The contest which was available to elementary students in grades K through 6 is a statewide competition that raises student awareness of recycling and waste reduction.
“This year we received many outstanding posters that exemplify the creativity of the young people in the 42nd Senatorial District,” said Senator Bonacic, “Each entry from my District displayed tremendous originality and vision as well as obvious concern for the ecological future of our communities and our state. I am proud of your work and that of your classmates, and encourage you to continue to study and learn more about the serious challenges that face our environment. I congratulate Christian, as well as all of the other students who took part in this competition.”
Students were encouraged to not only be creative, but to also convey a real commitment to making the environment a better place. Said Tuxedo Park’s art teacher, Megan Sweeney, “We started this project by talking about recycling and the fact that reusing things meant less waste and less unnecessary purchasing of materials. Students, teachers, and families were asked to bring in light weight, colorful, cardboard packaging, to cut up to make flowers.”
Head Master of Tuxedo Park School, Kathleen McNamara said, “Ms. Sweeney is an incredibly talented art teacher, and we are very lucky to have so many great opportunities for our students to make art and think creatively. While I am proud of all of our artists, I am especially tickled for Christian to have his art work honored in such a way.”
