José M. Serrano

February 26, 2014

(Bronx, NY)- Senator Serrano rallied alongside New York City Councilwoman Vanessa Gibson, New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, parents and students at the Mitchel Community Center in the South Bronx, in support of Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK).  The forum was sponsored by East Side Settlement, Children's Aids Society, United Parents of Highbridge, NYCHA and the Children's Campaign. Serrano expressed his support in favor of NYC's plan for UPK and expanded funding for after-school programs.

"Study after study show the proven, long-term benefits of pre-kindergarten for student achievement," said Senator Serrano. "It would be a complete disservice to the children of NYC to not invest in their futures. In the long-run, early education allows our children to improve their cognitive skills and prepares them to perform better academically. We must do all we can to ensure that every single child has the opportunity to succeed."

Senator Serrano recently released a statement urging Senate Republicans to put the UPK plan on the Senate floor for a vote this year. To read his statement, CLICK HERE.
