Senator Serrano Stands Behind Reorganizing the National Puerto Rican Day Parade

Serrano joins Attorney General for Announcement of Reforms to Puerto Rican Day Parade Management 

(New York, NY) - Senator José M. Serrano, Chair of the Senate Democratic Conference, stood alongside Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman, New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, and other elected officials for the announcement of reforms to the not-for-profit group that runs the National Puerto Rican Day Parade. These major changes to the organization became necessary after the Attorney General’s eight-month investigation into the group revealed financial mismanagement by the parade organizers and negligence by its Board of Directors. 

“The facts brought forth by Attorney General Eric Schneiderman are extremely troubling,” Serrano said. “The Puerto Rican Day Parade is very much a part of the cultural fabric of New York City, and it represents an opportunity for proud Puerto Ricans like myself to come together and celebrate our rich cultural heritage. Yesterday's announcement proved that our treasured and iconic parade has moved away from its core mission. With the overhaul of the Board of Directors and other reforms outlined by the Attorney General, I am confident that the parade will once again fulfill its mission and be a positive representation of the Puerto Rican community. I am grateful to Attorney General Eric Schneiderman for his thorough investigation, and I am confident that the new Board will work hard to achieve its mission and present a parade that is a wonderful celebration of pride and culture.”
