I want to express my appreciation to Governor Cuomo for taking another positive step in assisting those who suffered damage from Superstorm Sandy by signing the property tax relief law today.
A year and a half after Sandy, many of my constituents and other storm victims around New York City are still struggling to get back on their feet, repair their homes and businesses, and otherwise recover from this horrific weather event. This new law, which I co-sponsored, will provide partial real property tax abatements for the 2014-2015 City fiscal year for many properties that have been repaired or rebuilt, will lend a welcome helping hand to homeowners, co-op and condo owners, and local businesses that were battered by the storm.
A vast number of active constituent cases in my district offices are related to Sandy victims. The last thing these residents needed to endure were higher property tax bills even as they seek to rebuild their lives and our communities. Recovering from this storm is still a frustrating process. This law will help us to continue this vital progress.
