UTICA – Sen. Joseph A. Griffo is partnering with his local libraries to entice more children to read this summer. The New York Senate’s 2014 Summer Reading Program, in conjunction with the New York State Library, offers families several entertaining ways to encourage reading.
“Reading is the cornerstone of learning,” said Griffo, R-Rome. “I want children to be excited about picking up a book this summer, so our libraries have designed a lot of fun activities to keep kids motivated.”
Children can register with an adult’s help at www.nyread.com or at their local library. They will keep either a handwritten or online log of the books they read. At the end of the program, Senator Griffo will formally recognize each child’s achievement.
All ages are invited to participate, although the program highlights material best suited for kindergarten students and those in first through eighth grades. Last year, more than 1.7 million New York children participated in the program.
“I’m pleased to be a part of this summer reading program, as I have every year since being first elected to the Senate,” said Griffo.
