Bea Ruberto of Sound Beach Honored As Senator Ken LaValle’s Woman of Distinction 2014

May 14, 2014 – Senator Ken LaValle welcomed Bea Ruberto as the 2014 NY State Senate’s Woman of Distinction from the First District.  ““I am proud to honor Bea Ruberto as the 2014 Woman of Distinction from my District.” Senator LaValle said, “I applaud her decades of tireless community work and volunteerism.  Bea Ruberto joins the ranks of notable women in New York State who have been selected for this special recognition.” 

As an active volunteer in numerous community organizations and events for decades, Beatrice (Bea) Ruberto’s dedication and commitment to community is an exemplary model for everyone to follow.

Since becoming a member in the Sound Beach Civic Association in 1995, she has utilized her leadership skills to help build a better community for all residents.  Over the years, Bea has served in various capacities within the Association, beginning as a general member and progressing upwards to lead the organization as President.

Her vision and guidance has improved the area in a myriad of ways.  A few of her achievements include Chairing of the Annual Scholarship Fund Food Fair & Silent Auction, which has raised and awarded $10,000 to local students and hosting the Annual Pet Adopt-A-Thon, that brought animal rescue groups together with potential owners to find suitable homes for pets.  Bea has written and obtained grant applications to secure funds to improve the pedestrian walkway on Echo Avenue and for replacement of the "Welcome to Sound Beach" sign. She organized and managed the “Celebrate Sound Beach” Weekend; Conducted successful Hamlet-wide garage sales; craft sales and other profitable events to promote the Sound Beach area. Bea also expanded the bimonthly Civic Association Newsletter.  Her unselfish involvement has transformed the Sound Beach Civic Association into an integral part of the community.

Bea’s over twenty years of volunteer activity extend beyond Sound Beach as well.  She served as a member of the Brookhaven Anti-litter task force and helped organize “Clean Up Brookhaven” weekend.  She’s organized annual Meet the Candidates' Nights for federal, state, local and school district candidates to enable area residents to learn about the issues and stances.

Bea Ruberto’s generous use of her free time has truly made many lasting, positive impacts on the community. One of the most active, civic-minded individuals in the entire First Senate District, Bea Ruberto is worthy of the prestigious honor of “Woman of Distinction”.

Senator LaValle noted that the Senate’s “Women of Distinction” program was created to honor New York women who exemplify personal excellence or whose professional achievements or acts of courage, selflessness, integrity or perseverance serve as an example to all New Yorkers.  Women from the worlds of business, academics, and civic life, as well as those who have performed heroic or selfless acts, made significant discoveries, or provided examples of personal excellence against difficult odds have been honored at the annual event.
