Senator Kevin Parker Lauds Cuomo Administration’s Stand for Public Health and Safe Water
(Brooklyn, NY)- “Today, the Cuomo Administration announced that it would ban high volume hydraulic fracturing, otherwise known as hydrofracking, because it could contaminate the air and water and pose incalculable dangers to the public health.
I am pleased that the Governor and his acting State Health Commissioner have taken the step that I have advocated for six long years -- that the safety of our water, and of our health must be put first, and that until it could be indisputably scientifically proven that fracking could be done safely, it should not be done in New York. Separate and apart from the potential health risks, I have also been concerned about the potential impacts upon our greenhouse gas footprint, which as a state that has been strongly affected by climate change-driven storms like Hurricane Irene and Superstorm Sandy, we must work to reduce.
Today’s announcement also allows us to remember that New York has always been a leader in environmental action, and that we must continue to protect our natural resources and our world class agricultural sector, while continuing to develop green collar jobs and other long-term sources of jobs, small business growth, and economic development, so that our entire state may flourish.”
